Orientation Programs for International Students
Online F-1 and J-1 Visa Student Orientation
The International Student Online Orientation is REQUIRED for all new incoming international students with an F-1 or J-1 visa. Even if you are not new to the USA, you still must still complete the online orientation course, which will be customized for your program and visa type. When the course is available, it will appear on your portal as a PolyLearn course, and instructions will be e-mailed to you. This course is designed to provide you with important information you will need during your time at Cal Poly. Completion all modules of the online orientation course is necessary in order to proceed with your arrival check-in at Cal Poly.
Fall 2019 Arrival Orientation
The Fall 2019 Orientation is an in-person orientation where new international students will receive important arrival updates, meet the International Center staff as well as staff from more than a dozen campus resource centers, and get to know other international students. This orientation is scheduled during Week of Welcome before classes begin, and is mandatory for all new international students.
Date: Wednesday, September 18, 2019
Time: 2:00PM - 5:00PM (Check-in begins at 1:30PM)
Winter/Spring Arrival Orientations
We will have a small in-person orientation for new incoming students during the first week of classes. At this orientation, you can meet staff from the International Center as well as International Welcome Ambassador volunteers who can help you get acclimated to your new home at Cal Poly. We will also introduce you to some of the wonderful resources you have access to on-campus, including Career Services, University Police Department, Cross-Cultural Centers, Campus Health & Wellbeing and many more! You will receive an email regarding details of this orientation about a month prior to the start of classes so check your Cal Poly email often as you prepare for arrival.
Arrival Advising Appointments
After you arrive to the United States, you will be required to complete an online check-in form and you will be emailed about a month prior to classes with instructions on how to complete this check-in. When you complete your online check-in, you have the option to sign up for a quick 15-minute advising appointment with an international student advisor at the International Center. These meetings are optional but we strongly recommend you make an appointment.
At this appointment, you will be able to ask questions about your visa status, settling in at Cal Poly and discuss any adjustment issues you are having. We can also introduce you to the various resources across campus you can take advantage of.
