Independent Study Abroad

Cal Poly students studying abroad have a wide variety of programs to choose from:

  • Enroll in a Cal Poly sponsored program, including academic year, faculty-led quarter abroad, exchanges, and cooperative agreements
  • Enroll in another CSU sponsored program via the Intrasystem Visitor Application
  • Enroll in a program sponsored by another accredited U.S. university, college, or consortium
  • Enroll in a program sponsored by an organization other than a college or university
  • Enroll directly in a university abroad as an occasional or special student
  • Enroll in a U.S. or international college abroad

It is strongly recommended that you attend one of the general study abroad information meetings held most Wednesdays from 4:00-5:00 p.m. in 38-114. Many students choose to study abroad with a Cal Poly group for the ability to receive direct credit as well as to access financial aid; others prefer to study abroad independently. The options for independent (non-Cal Poly affiliated) programs vary, but students must select a program that either provides a U.S. accredited university transcript or a transcript from a recognized university in the host country. IEP has established a set of guidelines to follow in planning your independent study abroad experience.
