International Welcome Ambassadors Program
This program brings international and domestic Cal Poly students together to share their culture and develop friendships. International Welcome Ambassadors provide a support system to assist new international students with adapting to life in California. In return, International Welcome Ambassadors get to learn about life in other countries, make many new friends, and create long-lasting relationships with people all around the globe.
All new international students will have the opportunity to sign up for an International Welcome Ambassador and will be emailed an introduction to the program before they arrive. International Welcome Ambassadors keep in contact with their assigned students and meet them as soon as possible after their arrival on campus or may even offer to pick up their students at the SLO airport.
The International Welcome Ambassador Program offers various cross-cultural group events and social activities each quarter. Examples of past events include s'mores on the beach, karaoke night, pumpkin carving, thanksgiving dinner, movie night and weekly international coffee and tea time. International Welcome Ambassadors are responsible for checking in with their assigned student during the fall quarter. Some International Welcome Ambassadors may develop long lasting friendships with their international student contacts. However, an International Welcome Ambassador is expected to just be an initial point of contact knowing that many international students will connect and make their own friends when they settle in. We encourage international students to attend as many events as possible to get to know all of our International Welcome Ambassadors and the general student population.
Meet the International Welcome Ambassadors
You can get to know a little about each of our International Welcome Ambassadors on the Meet the International Welcome Ambassadors page. Feel free to reach out to any of the International Welcome Ambassadors you are interested in connecting with! You can click on their name to access their email.
You will also have the opportunity to meet many of our International Welcome Ambassadors during the International Student Orientation and our International Welcome Ambassador Kickoff Events in September. More information about this will be emailed to participants of the program.
New Students - How do I sign up for an International Welcome Ambassador?
All international students and scholars will be emailed details of the program with a link to apply. If you are an international student or scholar who would like to be assigned a International Welcome Ambassador but have not received an email, please email firstname.lastname@example.org.
Current Students - How can I apply to be a International Welcome Ambassador?
Students are recruited during winter quarter and begin participation in the spring for the following fall quarter. International students and study abroad returnees are highly encouraged to apply because these students have been through this experience themselves. International Welcome Ambassadors must be in good academic standing and be a positive role model with a positive disciplinary record. International Welcome Ambassadors must be available to attend the fall Welcome reception in September and to attend training and be in San Luis Obispo as early as August 10, 2017 to meet their International Student.
Please email email@example.com if you are interested in applying to be an International Welcome Ambassador and we will place you on an interest list for the next application cycle, which opens in March each year.
International Club - Another way to get to know international students is to join the International Club.
